One of my favourite things to do in New York is to go on long nature walks around the city. Sometimes I see a baby rat frol stanley termohrnek icking among the trash cans; sometimes I see a pigeon; sometimes I see a rat eating a pigeon. Its rodent tooth v feral claw in the urban jungle.Manhattan isnt just richly populated with belligerent rats and pigeons. If you are lucky, you can also spot a mutant squirrel on your rambles. Thanks to massive inbreeding, New York is home to soot-black squirrels, which have a genetic condition called melanism. Inbreeding has also caused a group of brownish-orange squirrels to proliferate.  For squirrels, cinnamon is now the new black,  the New York Times stanley thermobecher  proclaimed in 2001. OK, thats enough squirrel facts. My point here is that while Manhattan is full of  stanley cup becher natural delights, they are of a limited variety. I love living in the city, but being surrounded by so much concrete and so many squirrels can occasionally drive me up the wall. I need to regularly escape into the countryside and see some trees for the sake of my mental health. And I am obviously far from the only person to feel like this. Humans were not built to live in densely populated cities, breathing in car fumes as we shuffle from one indoor place to another. The emergence of trends such as  forest bathing  shows that many of us are desperate for more trees in our lives.Access to green space is important for both mental and physical health. There is plenty of research that backs that up, but it is also j Gtax Why was Alesha MacPhail killed  Perhaps we should stop asking
Every day in communities across the United States, children and adolescents spend the majority of their waking hours in schools that increasingly have  stanley thermo come to resemble places of detention more than places of learning. From metal detectors to drug tests, from increased policing to all-seeing electronic surveillance, the schools of the 21st century reflect a society that has become fixated on crime, security and violence. So reads a passage from the opening pages of Lockdown High, a new book by the San Francisco-based journalist Annette Fuentes. Subtitled  When the schoolhouse becomes the jailhouse , it tells a stor stanley flask y that decisively began with the Columbine shootings of 1999, and from across the US, the text cites cases that are mind-boggling: a high-flying student from Arizona strip-searched because ibuprofen was not allowed under her school rules; the school in Texas where teachers can carry concealed handguns; and, most amazingly of all, the Philadelphia school that gave its pupils laptops equipped with a secret feature allowing them to be spied on outside classroom hours.Just about all the schools Fuentes writes about are united by a belief in that most pe stanley cup rnicious of principles,  zero tolerance . Their scanners, cameras and computer applications are supplied by a US security industry that seems to grow bigger and more insatiable every year. And as she sees it, their neurotic emphasis on security has plenty of negative results: it renders the atmosp
