SAN DIEGO KGTV 鈥?After more than a year, the San Diego Convention Center reopens its doors with the first event kicking off this weekend.San Diegos tourism took a big hit during the pandemic, but the city hopes to rebound with 30 events scheduled from August to December 2021.Organizers for San Di stanley termosky ego Comic-Con, one of the citys biggest conventions, say they cant wait to be back inside of the venue. We are more than ready to join the list of the many conventions planned for this year as we prepare to launch Comic-Con Special Edition, November 26, 27, and 28, says Comic-Con Spokesperson David Glanzer. It will be good to be back at our home away from home again. It was nothing but smiles and cheers Friday morning as local leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors. Its been more than a year that the building closed due to the pandemic.One hundred fifty events had to be canceled over those months. The city lost about $2 billion in revenue.But the convention center wasnt fully closed to guests. In the early months of 2020, the venue was used to house people living on the streets. This was a move to keep them safe from the virus.Months later, the stanley becher convention center became a shelter for more than 3,000 unaccompanied migrant children seeking asylum. SAN DIEGO KGTV 鈥?The San Diego History Center is launching a new initiative to fill in San Diego s Black history timeline and needs the public s help.The local museum launched its new exhibit, Celebrate San Diego: Black History and Heritage. It s a virtual and physical timeline of Black San Diegans. We are reaching out to the community, says Shelby Gordon with the San Diego History Center. There are gaps and additional elements that need to be added there. Gordon says the items they have so far are priceless. With a history dating back to the 1800s.A photo on the timeline shows Solomon and Cordelia Johnson. The two were instrumental in forming the first Black church in San Diego in 1887, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The center also holds a keepsake from the church s stanley cup 100th anniversary. It s a snapshot in time. It s a snapshot of generations. It stanley flask s a snapshot of these individuals and families commitment to this church, says Gordon.Another historical marker in San Diego is the Douglas Hotel, which opened in 1924 stanley italia . The hotel hosted the premier blacks acts of the time, says Gordon. The Douglas Hotel was one of the few places that artists could play during segregation.Olympic runner, San Diego native, and Lincoln High Alum, Jackie Thompson Dunn, recently donated her competitor number from the Olympics in 1972.
